PostSubject: I rate the R8   Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:32 pm

I bought this 1995 Rover 420GSi (200/400 Series known as the R8 by Rover) for £80 (the vendors asking price) as his wife couldn't drive it anymore as she has a dodgy hip and couldn't press the clutch down. It had no MoT but it did have a good history, only 84k and a months tax.

Stuck it in for the MoT and it failed on both CV boots, which had perished but not split, so I replaced them and then got its new MoT. It really was in nice condition inside and out and drove lovely and I wanted to keep it, but I was offered £600 for it, so I took it! But if I'd have kept it it would only have owed me £198, and most of that was for one and a half MoT's! Even at £600 it's a nice cheap car

Anyway, that Rover will give years of good service if maintained properly and I know those 2.0 T-Series engines are good for 200k, and you rarely see a rusty one. Nice cars.

Kev.

That was a good deal that turned into a great one. Surely one of the best bangers of the '90s...its looks lovely in the pics too...

PostSubject: Hello Kev   Sat Oct 27, 2007 8:11 pm

Evening Kev,

back from Central Europe where Rovers are surprisingly popular, I saw a 75 and a 600 Taxi, amongst 25s and stuff. It almost felt like home.

Hi James,
Yup, I've heard that Europeans know class when they see it.

My brother-in-law is Italian. (and rich).
I was very surprised when he bought a Rover 75..
Apparently, he rated it very highly.

He's now had to buy something newer, as old cars aren't allowed in central Florence... A worrying development.

Yes, I saw your Car of the Year piece in Autocar and I agree that judgement should be reserved for about 10 years! What Car voted the 75 its COTY in 1999, which was a wise choice.
