PostSubject: Where have all the pocket money bangers gone?   Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:58 am

I love a good old root about on ebay, and friday ad, local rags etc to see what you can get for 300 or under with tax and test, even though i have a car, i still find it fascinating to see what was once seven grand plus+ of car going for peanuts, from a historical point of view, as (anorak time here...) i collect old tv adverts and i have a fair few for all cars sold in the UK from Chrysler in 1978, to local ford dealers pushing special edition mark 5 escorts in the early 90's, (one day i will you tube them! Very Happy )

Anyway, i want to ask: where have all the little cheapies gone?, those pocket money bangers with a bit of tax and test for 250 or so?, these were fairly plentiful once, but now seem to have vanished?

Ebay is full of cars that have no t&t for 200 these days, although the odd minor bargain turns up. Has scrappage got them all?

I recently picked up a old F plate Renault 19 1.7 which looks like it's been looked after with a months tax/2 months mot for 150 as a cheapo runabout (whilst i decide whether or not to sell my trusty old pug 405, as i'm having a bit of "fiscal turbulence" as Del Boy might say...)

What's the best car you've brought for under 300?, any stories welcome!

In February 2007 I bought a 1995 84k Rover 620ti for 250 with 10 months MoT and a couple of months tax on it and it was in really nice condition inside and out. It was bought as a non runner; needed a new rotor arm!

200BHP, 0-60 in 7 secs, 145mph. This is exactly how it looked when I got it...

Ran it for a month and sold it for 650!

You lucky, lucky man. That was a bargain, in fact, given the location of the photos, it's so clean it looks like a brochure shot!, always nice to see a 600, one of the best, if not the best car Rover did in the 90's...

Also, i'm looking for yet another car...I did buy the Renault, but got a odd phone call yesterday from the dealer saying "come and collect your deposit mate, my dad sold the car before you brought it..." so after this administrative oversight, i got my deposit back and am looking again.

Not all bad news though, after deliberating whether to sell the 405, i put it on ebay yesterday as a classified ad, sold it for 425 within two hours, not bad for a 1994 car, i brought it for 350 and had to valet it and replace the rear brake shoes etc but i don't think i lost too much.

Had a bit more of a look at some of the dealers in the part of Norfolk where my fiance lives, and the cheap car is still around on the forecourt if you look carefully...I've seen a very tatty mundane-o with a flat for 295 with T&T

A P reg Rover 400, a bit tatty, but lovely metallic turqouise for 350, a tatty felicia with full mot/1 months tax up for 395, but i could "have it for 300 to clear", and at the same dealer, little surprise of the day, a almost immaculate 1987 Micra 1.0 (too gutless for me lol!) for 295.

I've got my eyes on a near-immaculate Proton 1.5 mpi on Auto Trader, up for 325 with good T&T, still trying to get hold of the vendor, if it's ok, then offer 250 and take it from there...

Got the Proton for 275, eventful drive home in heavy rain with cheapo remoulds, which was a bit hairy, but it's home. It is in very good nick apart from tiny rot spots on arches etc, but is T&T'd until next March so i can't complain too much i guess, and i got a nice Blaupunkt stereo inside so not all bad as a runaround until i can afford a good Mondeo or Vectra... Cool

Best 300 cars I've owned have been.

1) A Mark One 1200cc Astra (My first car, bought for 250 ran 2 years sold for 450)

2) Mod Monty. the last of TD (perkins) Montego turbo diesel saloons, sold to the MOD. It had funny little map reading lights in the rear on arms. This car was fab, it had been waxoiled and serviced by the MOD. Then sold on a couple of times had a bashed rear bumper, was off road for a year then passed through the hands of a Maestro & Montego forum fanatic and on to me. 50mpg pulled like a train. Ran it 8 months with no problems then let it go with 1 months test left to a musician mate, when I put my first cab on the road a Rover 600 turbo diesel. Would have loved to cab the Monty but body too scratched and dented.

According to a good friend in the trade the scrappage scheme has seen lots of people who previously wouldnt have bought new now buying new and scrapping their old cars.

Hence theres now a genuine shortage of cheapies in the free ads. Also the current financial situation has seen many people keeping their cars longer and having some basic repairs done.

I'd say its only a matter of time now though till the cheapies reappear.

Loving the Rover 620Ti though! Really underated vehicles with Honda technology. The 623 makes a nice vehicle without wallet punching fuel consumption.

Bought two cars from ebay just before Christmas, each at 250.

K Reg Rover 216 with MOT til Sept and 84k miles.

The other is an L reg Honda Accord estate: MOT to June, 114k miles, 2.2i, electric everything all working bar one headlamp washer.....downside, its automatic!

By the way, I only need one and so if any one wants one, let me know and I'll keep the other. I'm in Leeds....

Assuming the Rover is a Honda engined version then 2 great cars for a bargain price (i'm gonna get shot at some point for slating the Rover K series!).

I always used to think the Honda Accord Aerodeck was a really classy car, good buy.

Not sure what the engine is in the Rover, its been parked up for a month and I've been using the Honda. It is a terrific car to drive and ride in and even the missus is coming round to it. I can't believe such a modern, reliable, comfortable, usable car can be had in this good condition for 250. I have, however, just return 24 mpg on a full tank during the snowy weather (I have had a washing machine in the back throughout and an occasional play in the snow).

If I can achieve 30 mpg on each tank, I will keep it. If not, I will have to revert to the Rover and sell the Accord.

My buddy up here in Scotland has a mot station that has been putting through 200 cars a month for scrappage.
The downside is he is unlikely to get these customers back for a few years as the cheepo new cars will be dealer serviced.
That has taken some very nice trade ins out of the loop putting pressure on the rest of the market.
The same happened in Germany as a result of scrappage schemes there.

It distorts the market and the knock on`s are felt by the independent garages for at least three years till the free services run out.

Still bargains if you are a forum member as guys tend to sell cars for the real value.

Another 500 banger, 1996 420GSi Tourer with 8 months MoT and 2 months tax to run on it. 650 worth of Koni shocks and thousands spent on engine tuning.

I like that Rover very much!

Always had a soft spot for the 400 Tourers and very rarely see one around these days - it's nice to see one in such good condition too!

We just bought a golf gti for 600 quid that has mot till october ........mk3 in red with a few scrapes but overall its a rocket.

needs about a 60 quids worth of parts to make it perfect. waterpump is noisy but we have one of those as well for nowt
We are going to change the wishbones to make the handling like new.
as well as service it and sort the 2 rust blooms (surface) to neaten the whole car up.

its got a nice sony head unit as well.

tyres are ok but are not quite up to the more spirited drive that this car is capable of.

That Golf looks quite nice too!

Only thing that puts me off VW's is that their values remain quite high but at the end of the day looking at a few on eBay and the mileages they are capable of, is there any wonder?

Its already been mentioned before on this thread, but it's only a matter of time before the cheapies start returning to the market. Give it a couple of months once the scrappage scheme has finished and they should start getting back onto the market.

What really gets my goat up at the moment is that every Tom Dick and Harry thinks that there clapped old, rusted to hell, L reg Escort is worth 2k and so they are advertising with prices to reflect this (Yes I have seen this with my own eyes parked on the side of a road near me !!) Shocked

I noticed this lack of silly-cheap cars too, it's definitely the scrappage to blame.
You can still find them, but ebay is not always the best place to look as everyone else looks there too which drives prices up.
The trick is to look for deeply unfashionable stuff. I've had two volvos 740s from ebay, both were well inside our price range, and both flew through their next MOT.
Non-GTi golf mk2s, pre-2002 suzuki swifts, pretty much any Rover more than 10 years old, late '80s/early 90's Audi 80/90/100, any pre-850 volvo, mk1 mondeo, non-turbo diesel pug 406/306/106, any BMW more than 10 years old,are all biscuit money. mainstream models like fiesta, astra, focus are still seen as moderately desireable so tend to be pricier.

Yes, I was looking today at some Corollas and 323s and Almeras in the sub 500 bracket for a friend, these are the real cheapies now.
