we are all searching for the ultimate banger, some go for speed with gti's and the like, but these type of cars have normally had a hard life by the time they reach my 1500 self imposed threshold so have learnt to leave these well alone, and after my last charriot was put to an early death by myself (see prev) i have been burning the midnight oil, and i think i have hit on perfection, how about the lexus ls 400 ?.

These are a great deal if well kept, but the idea of 'bangernomics' is to get a car that is sound & won't cost much to fix, as well as being able to be sold when you're done with it.

The Lexus is strong & long-lasting, but God help you if something should break. But if it hangs together & you can fix small electrical things which are inevitable on these sorts of cars as they age, you'll do well. Sure beats the pants off a Merc or BMW in that regard, let alone a Jag or Citroen XM!

Personally I love the Lexus, Toyota Windom isn't it, plus I tried to buy a GS300 last year but it was too pricey. I agree that if they need fixing that it will cost a bomb, but I am tempted by sub 2000 just to say I ran one for a bit. I love quality Bangers and currently the Saab 9000 CSE is running well although the air con on my BMW 525 has gone missing and if that costs a fortune to sort then I will probably go Lexus for a bit...I'll keep you posted...

PostSubject: Citreon XM?   Wed Jun 20, 2007 7:12 pm

Speaking of the Citroen XM, are they really as bad as people make out? I once thought about buying one some time back. It was the VSX model on an M plate if I remember correctly. Around 112k on the clock and in very good condition bodywork wise. 599 was the asking price.
I know there can be some problems with the suspension spheres needing replacing after X amount of miles, but are there any other pitfalls of ownership of the Citroen XM?

My local garage is a Citroen specialist and they say that the worst thing about XM owners, when they have bought them for out sort of money and they need repairs they can't believe the cost of parts. The truth is these were costly cars new hence fixing them is pricey. Bear that in mind, buy a fully sorted well looked after example and hopefully your costs will be low. Incidentally I almost bought one with a mate, it was dead but even the low offer we made was rejected.

PostSubject: Mercedes 190   Tue Aug 21, 2007 4:10 pm

I've always quite fancied the Mercedes 190E and 190D.

Since I can pick one up for less than 500, it's certainly banger territory.
Is there anything horrendous about them that I should know about?

(Last year I intended to move "up" from standard bangers, to upmarket bangers. Ran out of cash. Damn.)

How about Fiat 126 for Ultimate Banger?

I've had two, and I'd have another if I could find one.

Driving experience: "like being followed by a small, angry lawnmower".

(2-cylinder, aircooled, in the back..)

I was originally going to say "chased" rather than "followed", but that would have been stretching it.

What about the Lexus is200?

I've always liked the look of these, and they are basically a jumped-up Toyota anyway (Toyotas are white-goods cars)

These are the cars that started the silly rear lights thing with the boy racers..

Surely, they are getting cheap by now?

PostSubject: Still not that cheap   Mon Nov 26, 2007 11:52 am

I agree that they should be really cheap, but haven't seen anything below 3000 but I must have another look as I agree they look good. It's an Altezza in the homeland...
