PostSubject: Cheap Mot's   Sat Jun 06, 2009 9:19 am

Hi all,

Just thought I'd mention a place where I get my cars mot'd, the one near me is in Crayford but they have a few branches around the south coast too, there called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and offer mot's for £19 if booked online and £38 if you phone. Ive seen them do them for £10 and occasionally for free!

Cant help but keep the banger running costs to a minimum Smile

Sadly my nearest is in kent, nearly 20 miles away! Also I don't think they do class7 for vans up to 3.5 tons. Still a good find though.

Hello Fred, I actually don't mind paying a bit more for my MOT if it supports my local garage who incidentally do a discount anyway, but they do actually repair stuff and not just make you spend money.

Well to be fair, I do have a local MOT station that does class7 for £50.

I'm always suspicious that a cheap MOT is just a ruise to tell you you need lots of work doing, and yes they can do it for £xxx - so this sounds like a good business idea. My sister went somewhere for a cheap MOT and apparently they missed a few things which although not fail points, should really have been put on an advisory notice, but weren't. I guess sometimes you get what you pay for.

I just organised car insurance for my banger Carisma today, and I noticed Kwikfit are giving a free mot voucher if you buy their insurance.

Personally, you couldn't pay me to take a MOT at Kwikfit. My local mechanic (a nice guy who will fit second hand parts I supply and bill me and let me pay it up) uses the same MOT centre for all his cars day in day out. He has an understanding with them, and his cars are treated fairly as a result.

I insured my Subaru last year through kwik fit, and had a free MOT test
Out of curiosity I took it a month afore it was up, they downed it on CV gaitors
emissions. ball joints on both sides,
brakes, (even though I had fitted a new set front and rear 6 months previous)
I thanked them, and took it to my buddy Malc
of Chase Auto Repairs,
and he passed the lot, but said the N/S gaitor may need replacing
I told him about the Kwik fit fail
and he went about showing me the goodness of the aforesaid bad bits
He then as he is a good sort explained kwik fit only fail the bits they can do
as above
I paid for his dinner
and made tea for the the rest of the day Bow

When I lived in London I used to get MOT's done at the Borough of Enfield's Council workshops, who did it as a commercial service. Probably still do.

I was running (and living in) a Dodge Renault 4-tonner "motorcaravan" converted from a British Telecom mobile workshop. Sounds rather illegal, "new age traveller" stylee, and it was. Mrs Thatcher had had a specific hard-on against new age travellers a few years previously, and I tried to keep a fairly low profile.

OTOH I was running/designing Treasury and Capital Market trading networks for a major City bank, (and paid much, much more than ever before or since), and I didn't travel much, because driving this relatively huge truck in London made my mouth go dry.

The only other places I could find that could do a vehicle that size were Dept of Transport HGV testing facilities, who I suspected would be rather strict. The Enfield workshop was full price, but since they didn't do repair work I felt they had no vested interest in inventing faults. The engineers knew thier stuff and were quite knowledgable about Dodges, since the Council used to run them. Unfortunately they had chucked all thier old manuals out, incredibly expensive to buy.

When the truck got stolen I continued to take cars there, and remained satisfied with the service. I think it might be worth paying full price for a straight deal, but I'm glad I don't have to now.
