Figured at some point will need to weld a patch so ...

I'm now the proud owner of a mig welder in the spirit of bangernomics got it for a third of the retail price off eBay seller had bought on a whim and could not get the hang of it

Which worried me as I've never used a mig either any tips on training ?

Well done. Practice practice practice on scrap steel. Watch some youtube videos. Your welds arnt gonna be pretty to begin with. Buy an automatic mask. You can see what your doing then and have both hands free.

Flap discs are good for preparation and grinding down welds. You can also get thin cutting discs which make life easy.

Enjoy.

Thanks the welder came with an auto mask as well
There was even gas left in the small disposable one they give you when new so he can't have tried very hard

Picked up a full size bottle today so just need to find some scrap to practice on

I did an evening class at the local tech. Got an ONC module, IIRC.

My aluminium test weld was almost perfect. Instructor was shocked. I think it might have been a bit of a fluke, but I've never done another so I can kid myself it wasn't.
