OMG!!!

I seem to remember that the little pinto had a habit of self combusting if the fuel tank was as much as hit by a pebble Shock

Can you imagine it coupled with decompression at 20,000 ft Shock

Did you spot the tire tracks being left from the cars rubber under all that weight as it taxied down the runway lm

Flying car isn't a good idea in the first place but,

Great entertainment value if nothing else......

I just wonder if the UK had done this what we would of got?

I've read somewhere that the exploding Pinto thing had no statistical support, ie no worse than other contemporary cars.

It did apparently explode if you dropped it from a great height though, as did one of these prototypes when the wings came off. Apparently the engineering wasn't very good.

I'm impressed that it worked at all though, given the weight penalty that must be involved in starting with a standard car. If it'd been better built I imagine it might have found a niche market in California.

An Allegro would be more aerodynamic but I wouldnt like FWD in this application. (Or any applicatiom, really)

There's a linked article about finding another of the prototype cars for sale, (without the wings). An (ex) flying banger!

If we believe what we see in American films just about EVERY American car will explode on the slightest impact!!

If you were to build a flying Allegro it would need to drive backwards as apparently the Allegro is more aerodynamic in reverse - which I guess would solve the front wheel drive issue Shocked

It looks like they are going to keep the car very much as found and have got the family of the pilot who flew it on that tragic flight to sign the car bodywork Thumb

The also got Galpin Ford president Bert Boeckmann's son Beau to sign and pose with the car.

I thought I recognized him??

Hes the guy from GAS or "Galpin auto sports" where the first ever "Pimp my Ride" cars were produced,Small world eh :Co:

When I saw the name Galpin I wondered if it had anything to do with GAS. Thanks for the info.

I like the bit where the arriving big-jessie-private-pilot is soooo strung out by having to wait for a hire car and load his own luggage that he has to have a wifely neck rub.

I nominate the 1983 Renault Fuego. The Fuego was so spectacularly goofy

Dont see that (apart from being FRENCH, of course).

I wouldn't want one here, (in Taiwan) because the BIG GLASS would make it a horribly hot hatch, but it looks OK, and the aerodynamics are probably pretty good, so it'd probably be pretty economical on petrol.

Rare though, so spares'll be an issue now, but that doesn't qualify it for "shouldn't have been" IMHO

Clarkson vid is out of date, incidentally. One more now, presumably either de-SORNed or imported.
