PostSubject: looking for a hero!   Tue Mar 12, 2013 1:34 pm

Sorry, actually looking for a tow car!

I would like to find a car to carry me around France doing my job (horse dentist) and occasionally say 6 to 10 times a year tow a 750kg unbraked trailer.

I have calculated that, based on French Petrol and diesel prices a 50mpg diesel will save me 8 to900 euros per ann on my existing 36mpg petrol car. I don't tow with the current one but it would be nice to be able to do so with it's replacement.

There are not many that fit this bill and currently I am considering an Audi A6 1.9TDI.

Budget around 2 to 2.5 grand GBP. Car will be sourced in the UK.

Any other suggestions?

cheers Ian aka Equidents.

I would say a C5 hdi can be picked up cheap enough but get one with the hydromatic suspension I know my dad used my old one for a towing a caravan round France got good mpg in fact he liked it so much he got another one to replace it. I would always recommend cruise control if your towing not done a huge amount myself just small trailers but it does help keep you to the speed limit as it is too easy to find your speeding

I have been looking at towing weights on the internet and have been looking at the figures shown of some vehicles on Autotrader.

Some, for example a Volvo V70 2.5 TDI shows 500kg on autotrader as the unbraked weight but it weighs 1415kg so according to the NTTA-- ntta.co.uk it should be capable of 707.5kg unbraked i.e. half the minimum kerb weight?

The D5 however weighs 1585 min kerb and unbraked trailer at 750kg.
confused? you will be!

So a Mondeo 2.0td 115 estate weighs 1500kg min kerb! Voila 750kg but ask Ford and they say the 2.2tdci can pull 750kg but not the smaller engines???

So who is right? manufacturer or the 50% of min kerb weight rule?

the engine might be able to move it but can the car actually stop with the extra weight a bigger engined car should be able to stop due to the bigger brakes from stopping at higher speed but smaller engine smaller brakes even in the same body shell so I would go by the manufacturer. But the weight is usually well under what it can actually pull as how does the normal bloke know what weight his trailer is fully loaded but if you get caught over loading it then your in bother same thing if you dont have a license to pull over 750kg and tow an empty trailer capable of taking a ton

Hmmn!

Citroen C5 110 hdi 2001-2004 seems to be 730kg unbraked so that's out as well.

Here and maybe UK also the police look at the maximum weight the trailer can be to judge suitability so a trailer plated if applicable to say in this case 750kg must be towed by a vehicle that is specified to pull that weight of trailer.
