PostSubject: Car History ?   Mon Mar 11, 2013 10:33 pm

Since passing my driving test in 1997 I have owned a mulitude of old tat ranging from bad, awful and odd to moderately masochistic.
A little anecdote will follow some of the worst ones.
Starting with the first car on my pathway to banger oblivion.................

1. 82 Datsun Sunny 1.5 GL Auto £50. first car, bittersweet memories of this one.
2. 85 Nissan Sunny 1.5 SGL £75. Robbed the engine from the above car to fix this one.
3. 81 VW Golf £325 Epic MOT failure after only 10 months of ownership (gutted) scrapped.
4. 90 MG Metro £200 bought the same day to get me home after the Golf expired. Swiftly sold on after a few weeks. Fun but crap.
5. 87 Nissan Sunny Diesel. £600. 2 years worth of economical motoring at a leisurely pace. until fuel injction pump sprung a leak and sold on again
6. 84 Nissan Cherry £175. Expired in spectacular style with clutch and head gasket failure. Scrapped after 3 months.
7. 92 Ford Escort £1495. OUCH ! A financially painful experience. see description posted in "what was your worst banger"
8. 87 Mitsubishi Colt Auto £60. Absolute bargain and ran like a swiss watch.
9. 94 Vauxhall corsa auto £1000. Hmm, boring car with a drink problem, sold on a few months later for £1150
10. 90 Proton GL £free. Best value banger so far. 2 years of trouble free motoring sold for £90 with a months MOT left to run.
11. 94 Vauxhall Astra saloon £50 ebay purchase. Not one of my better purchases but still managed to sell it on with a small profit.
12. 89 Mitsubishi Lancer £200. Written off while parked at work after less than 24 hours of ownership. NOT happy about that.
13. 91 Ford Sierra Sapphire £200 purchased the same day after above car was written off, from chap who worked next door. sold 3 weeks later for £475
14. 93 Peugeot 205 diesel £200 cheap but too small and french too. Ebayed after 2 weeks for £450
15. 92 Rover 218SLD £75.from same chap who sold me the sierra. cosmetically challenged but economical and reliable transport for 2 years.
16. 94 Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD £75. Ran it on veg oil and smelled like a chip fryer and went like stink for a diesel.
17. 99 Ford Escort TDdi £160. Bought from the a*sehole I worked for briefly, purely to sell on for profit and to get one up on the t*sser !
18. 94 Ford Mondeo £40. A bit thirsty so moved on quickly
19. 91 Ford Fiesta £100. needed a car quickly, turned into a welding marathon. Sold on soon after when a friend needed a cheap car quickly
20. 98 Peugeot 306TD £200. I should have learned my lesson with the first peugeot, what a shed !
21. 92 Ford Sierra Estate TD £300. The best of them all, but the wife hated it because it looked like a hearse. Managed to keep it 2 years though La
22. 89 Ford Fiesta £40. Utterly rancid interior by a 60 a day smoker who kept the windows shut. cleaned it up drove it a bit then moved it on.
23. 94 Vauxhall Astra Auto £200. Bargain of the year sadly written off when a woman reversed without looking and crashed into it.
24. 94 Toyota Corolla £200. Like a cockcoach, indestructable. Reliable old bus but I just didn't like it for some reason.

There have been dozens of others that have just been pilfered for parts and scrapped but not worth mentioning them individually.

My current hack is a 92 VW Golf GTI. I love it to bits but I will soon have to accept the inevitable fact that i cannot justify the running costs of such a thirsty car and may be forced to sell her soon. When the time comes I will be very sad to see it go.

What!!!

Is that a Mk2 or 3?

I used to have a Mk2 GTi and it was one of the most economical cars I have ever owned. Easy to get 35 mpg day to day & 40+ on a run (The trip computer in the MFU helped!).

Its an early mk3 with the 2E enigine and bosch digifant management system. I'm lucky if I can squeeze 30 mpg out of it. I don't drive it hard either.
To say I'm disappointed is a slight understatement.
