I need to take my sump off anyway, and I want to check my engine bearings (main and possibly big end) since I've reason to believe they might be damaged.

Is it OK to take the bearing caps off one-at-a-time, examine/photograph the shell and journal, then replace and torque-up before doing the next one?

This is my favored option, but the procedure in the Daihatsu manual assumes an engine rebuild, so all the bearings are loosened / tightened together.

Is doing them one-at-a-time likely to cause distortion?

Why can you not just release the torque on all of the bearing caps and then individually remove each one, check and replace, then tighten up but not torque up. Once all are checked torque them up as per the manual.

Dunno. Is that better?

I suppose the difference with the rebuild situation is that the block is the other way up, so the bearing caps are supporting the shafts weight.

Perhaps it doesn't make any difference.
