OK you can run some diesel engines on straight veg oil, some on a mix and nearly all on bio diesel what I am wondering is what is the best thing to run as the mix ie veg and .......
diesel 1.41
petrol 1.32
bio diesel 0.95 unknown quality or 1.19 known high quality
something else (legal mix) ????
Veg 0.90
Prices are per litre

My current thinking is a 50:50 mix running up to a 80:20/90:10 even 100% veg to something else.

Veg-bio is the cheapest mix but wonder if it is the best or just a case of using Shanon's lollipop theory (uni math lecture) if you want to see what flavour suck it and see - ie give each a go. He also had a wallpaper theory in that if it took a roll of wallpaper to solve an equation you where doing it wrong lol. For some reason this is one of the best things I took from his lectures.

slight snag is that it is 1.75/ltr and I thought diesel was expensive

Try some of the local filling stations, that's where I get it from, I collect Tilley lamps and similar lamps so I'm always buying it and that's why I looked around and found that my local Shell station was the cheapest.

Tilley lamps we where just discussing them on Friday night at scouts we have 4 of them and are thinking of getting them back in to operation for summer camps and was looking at where to get the fuel and b&q was the easiest. Only prob is that we aren't sure how to use them or if they are all there as they where found looking new in orig boxes in the back of the store when it was converted to a climbing wall last year. They def need new burning bits whats the name wee thingies so will be looking for them then get one going and work on the rest. I have seen them used by other troops and the light is so much better than the battery lamps we currently issue to the patrols.

Sometime in the six months between my buying a gallon for general cleaning/rustproofing purposes, and my buying a disposable diesel Maestro to run on kerosene, all the local bulk pumped outlets (Edinburgh petrol stations and my favorite petrolhead tool shop) stopped selling it, apparently at HM Customs and Excise command. Kerosene was available packaged but I couldn't find it at a price that saved much money.

Heating oil seemed to be the only economic equivalent, and I didn't have ready access to that, so I didn't try it.

I left the country in a sulk shortly after. Smile

Heating oil (and kerosene, AFAIK) would contain dye, and my understanding is that it'd be just as illegal as using tax-free diesel, as supplied to farmers.

I've heard that white spirit reduces the tendancy of SVO to gum/coke up your engine, though I don't know that for a fact. Perhaps petrol would have a similar effect, but one hears dire warnings about engines detroyed by accidentally adding petrol. I accidentally put a few gallons in a hired diesel Clio once and got away with it, but I can't rule out long term damage.

If you could be bothered, water injection into the air charge would make sense as a way of keeping the engine clean. It might also be possible to incorporate water with the fuel, using something like alcohol or acetone as a bridging solvent.

This kind of thing is a bit experimental and I'd want a disposable (non-turbo) car to try it on.
