PostSubject: Does anybody stick to just one make and model?   Mon Feb 04, 2013 9:01 am

When I was growing up I remember many that relied who on bangers buying just one make and model and sticking to what they knew.

A friends dad had about half a dozen Reliant Regals in his garden and if one didnt pass its MOT he would just start pulling bits off another and put that in for an MOT instead :Wky:

I also knew somebody who always had two Cortinas and would alternate using them and lay one up MOT the other until one was too far gone at which point he bought another and stripped the useful parts off the bad one and ended up with a shed full of parts and the better one of the two and a better condition replacement for the one that had come to the end of its useful life.

I think if you have the space this does make sence in so many ways.

Say you buy a brand new set of tyres then after a few thousand miles the car can no longer pass an MOT as its just too far gone :W:

Well you can unbolt the wheels and give them a new home on one of your others thats more roadworthy Thumb

You always have spares at hand, repair panels that may not be available or should something become disconnected something to compare it with :Wky:

There is a house near by with 3 Volvo 760 estates in the garden, the owner must be doing the very same thing as theres one real snotter and two resonable ones, one year he appears to use one whilst he gets the other spot on for the next years MOT and vice versa and some panels off the snotter have found there way onto both the others :Wky:

So does anybody else do this sort of thing?

Waste not want not Bangernomics

Love it

Jodie Very Happy

Personally no, I've always chopped and changed between makes & models of car, although when I was very young my dad did have two Cortina's that he ran side by side, but that was more because he always needed a second car available to get to work and he was in love with his blue, 2.0 Ghia Cortina so then bought a 1.6 L Cortina as a backup (which in turn he hated lol! )

It does make sense though - spares or repairs cars can still be had sub 300quid, over a period of time if you just had a car to rape parts off you could quite easily make that 300quid back (and some) and in turn keep your main car on the road a bit longer (thus saving the purchase price of a new car for a while).

Whether it is something that is readily available to lots of people is of course another thing as it would require having somewhere to store another vehicle (I'm quite lucky in the fact I have two garages so can store things 'off road' despite not having any off street parking) but if you lived on a terraced street with nothing available it is something that might not be such a possibility. Cue each region of bangernomics members clubbing together for regional storage units to hoard scrap cars in Wink

I find it hard to stray away from fiat.... since 2001 i have had a host of fiats,

2001 fiat punto sporting
2001 fiat punto mia
2002 fiat punto sporting
2003 fiat stilo 1.2 16v
1998 fiat marea weekend HLX 20v
ford mondeo st24 (big mistake lasted 10 months)
2002 fiat marea weekend HLX 20v
1998 fiat marea weekend HLX 20v
2003 fiat stilo multiwagon jtd

but as fiat decided not to make any new estates after 2008 my next car will probably be a alfa, just cannot shake my love of italian metal

I haven't in the past, I've just had what has turned up.

Until I had the Favorit which I replaced with another Favorit and now the next generation Felicia. Probably more to do with economics than love of the car, (51%/49% Wink ). I've got bits that I can still use. But I think after this one it will be back to what happens along and any 'bits' left over can go to new homes via internet selling channels of one type or another.

But the thought had passed through my mind a little like the Cortina driver you mention, get a spare Favorit (at the time) or Felicia and keep off road as the back up or donor! It's just the space could be an issue - wife Hear nothing

I have never really stuck with one make my car history goes as follows

'99 fiat punto mk1 - 2 year and gear box died
'02 ford ka mk1 - 2 years then moved to scotland for uni so brother got it
then the bangers started
'88 audi 80 - engine died
'76 series 3 swb land rover - sold as I was working as a delivery driver in domino and the audi dies and needed cash quick
'86 merc 190e - rust was too much for mot so sold on
'92 merc 190e - sold to buy an engagement ring
'03 C5 still going strong

my dad on the other hand not into bangers but has nearly always driven french as far back as i can remember
austin maestro
Renault 19
Citroen bx
Peugeot 405
Citroen Xantia mk2
Citroen c5 (now mine)
Citroen c5 estate
he drives his cars until they are near death and ready for the scrap yard usually due to going over 200k and as most people dont like anything over 50k so well past it except to us lot lol

It makes sense, but it's not something I'd do - the joy of Bangernomics is you can chop and change, surely?

When I was a kid the next-door neighbour had a Maxi, as did my dad. Both cars were getting on a bit - I think my dad's was about 11 or 12 and the neighbours was a year or two younger - anyway they bought a spares car and it lived on our drive for a few years. It was a great place to play, although I can't think what spares they got off it!

IIRC Italian metal shakes off at the first April shower.

(Know what you mean though. My dad ran Lancias and Alfas.)

Would make a lot of sense to alternate two identical cars. Never managed it in UK because I've never had SORN capability.

Would be practical here in Taiwan, because surveillance isn't very intensive. In the UK I had neighbours who called the cops the instant my tax disc ran out.

However, if you let the tax lapse here its difficult/impossible to re-register, so the second car could only be for spares.

No engine swaps either, annoyingly. They're illegal.

I'm new around here but I buy and sell cars for a living. Every since I was 18/19 I never kept my own "smoker" longer than 6 months regardless. Then about 8yrs ago (I'm in my 50s now) I picked up an old Mitsubishi Pajero and I cannot think of a reason to get rid of it. It is a van, people carrier, removal truck, luxury limo, tow vehicle and mobile hotel! Its seen out an ex wife and my youngest son. The worst thing about it, is if and when some specialist knowledge is required, I have to endure the bobble hat brigade on the cliquey owners forum! Rolling Eyes

I did once go through a phase of just running Mk3 Granadas one after the other....until the supply of sound ones dried up :-)

Mk3 Granada was a great car! I had a few of those myself. In fact I was at an auction a few years back and a Cosworth Scorpio barely made reserve. Might have been worth a punt for the parts alone!

I have a friend who buys the cosworth motors for his racing landrover, it's like a bowler but not!

I try to have a different car each time, life is too short and there are too many cars to try!

I keep getting Ford's though, I have an appt with a shrink to see if this can be stopped!

Nothing wrong with Fords, parts prices mean you can realistically keep them on the road, compare that to Alfa Romeo/Fiat from the 80s!

An old pal of mine used to be into Lotus Europas (not strictly bangers, but what the hell). He usually had at least 5 or 6 of 'em on the basis that at least there was a chance of one of 'em working at any given time. Being Lotus, however, that turned out to be a fairly optimistic viewpoint... Wink

I think it can be a good idea to stick to one type of car if you can simply because you will get to know the car quite well and in time you may well accumulate a bunch of spares. Good post

Good point :Wky:

Thats the way I see it too,if you buy parts for the car while they are available on offer then if the car reaches its end life not only do you have parts already in stock but you can also strip whats left for the next one if you have the space and the facility Thumb
