PostSubject: Tell me, What was your worst banger?   Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:44 am

Don't know if this has been done before but her is goes:

What was the worst car you decided to buy? Maybe it looked good on paper, the price was too tempting, you'd been searching for one for ages, it had four good tyres or just seemed like a good car until you crossed the sellers palm with silver........

Mine was an 1989 pug 405 1.6 I got for about £400 back in 2000. It wasn't perfect with the add scrape but nothing too serious or so I thought. I had only got my licence the year before so was a little innocent to say the least.
For the test drive it started well from cold and appeared to drive well for a car with 130000 miles and I was well impressed with the electric windows and sunroof as well as central locking. My previous car was an 82 fiesta so these gadgets were a big plus! Smile It didn't hang around either (compared to the fiesta anyway) and was really comfortable.

Anyway I got her home. Showed the pride a joy to my girlfriend. The next day we decided to go for a spin.

The first issue that became apparent was the sunroof. It had rained the night before and of course leaked but you only noticed it when you turned to the right when cold water trapped in the switch housing splashed out to the left all over the my now soaked girlfriend. She wasn't actually soaked but that was the impression she gave!

Next, cue the traffic lights. I bring the car to a stop and the engine revs drop and she conks out.... but she starts up again and off we go and I think no more about it as it doesn't happen again the rest of the journey. Of course this happened every time it started from cold until one day I figured it out if you left it running for a few minutes before you set out (like we did on the test drive) it'd run away fine. But you can't leave the car running a few minutes every time you want to go somewhere so I began to tinker but to no avail.

Soon the problem began to get worse and with all the extra cracking the starter had to do it began to act up at random. I kept a length of timber in the boot so I could give the motor a bit of a thump to get it going. Naturally it soon failed altogether (on christmas day) so the next day we're off to the auto electrician (the only one open the day after x-mas) for a replacement.

Meanwhile for some reason the central locking would decide to unlock sometimes. Usually 10-20 seconds after it was locked. This was as you'd imagine very annoying. You'd just lock the car walk a bit down the street when you'd here clunk and the car would be unlocked again. Anyway after much tinkering discovered the problem was the plastic knob on the inside was getting stuck in such a position that is would pull the lever up just enough to unlock the car but only after a few seconds. Removed the knob. Problem solved.

Next thing that happened I lost all braking one day as I was coming home. I stamped on the brake a number of times and they miraculously returned. Turns out to have had a stuck rear brake and it suddenly became unstuck just to scare the crap out of me!

Next the rear box came away all at once. Somebody saw it fit to hold it on with extra thick elastic bands.....fixed it but the starter acted up again.

Fixed that again and also replaced the track rod ends cos they were a little rattley. Was bringing her to get her wheels aligned when just out the road I lose all gears. This time I had to call the professionals. I hadn't the foggiest what went wrong. They told me that a a bolt that holds the gear selection mechanism sheared and the end of this bolt was left in the steering rack to which the mechanism was attached. They replaced the rack with one I hunted down from a scrappy and the whole thing set me back £300.

This was all in the space of a year after which I managed to sell the damn thing for £250 and put the money towards buying a much more reliable 1991 corolla saloon. Later I heard back from the fella who bought it from me. It had been stolen and used in a post office raid after which it was burnt out. Good riddance!
He said he had very little trouble with the car up to the point when it was stolen and only replaced the ball joints to pass the next nct (mot). I think the car hated me! Laughing

This car taught me loads. It was a steep learning curve but needless to say I'm now a little wary of pugs! Smile

Cracking thread idea and something which we have all suffered at some point - there are those things that at time of purchase we miss/just don't think about.

For me it has to be this. Back in 2007 I bought a 1995 (M) Ford Mondeo 1.8 GLX TD for £70 from my local auction house. It had 2 months MOT, I got it home, got a full 12 months MOT put on and taxed it. Fantastic motor. Ran it for 6 months then sold it to a mate for £400. Problem was he could only scrape together £300 cash, so after some debating and agreement it was decided that, as I also needed a car, I would take his P reg Fiesta 1.3 LX off his hands. It had 98k miles, 3 months MOT and a bit of tax, was fitted with Escort Si alloys and the standard 13" steels were also included in the deal. This was the car:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

In effect it cost me £100. I didn't test drive it and, well, to be honest I didn't even look at it, cash and keys exchanged hands and that was that.

It was in reasonable shape, apart from the bonnet had the word 'F**K' scrawled into the paint with a key, which in turn had been touched up with green paint and quite frankly just looked ten times as bad. BUT, a few days earlier whilst on a scrap yard hunt for parts for my mates Escort, I recalled seeing an identical colour Fiesta in the corner. Rang up to confirm it was still there, agreed £20 for a bonnet and I made the trip down there. First trip out in the car...

And it just wasn't right. It would pull to 40mph then would hesitate and stutter like mad. I eventually got there, swapped the bonnets over in the yard and buggered off, albeit slowly trying to figure what the hell was wrong with the car.

This was the case for a few days and was quite frankly embarrassing. I didn't really investigate it much and just let it be.

2 weeks after I bought the car, I blew the engine up in a spectacular fashion on the A19 whilst driving it to a garage for a price to trade it in (hoping I'd get more than the 100quid I'd paid ! lol! ) It was so spectacular in fact that there was a DynoRod van behind me (you know, bright orange and all that) when I looked in my mirror 2 seconds later there was a ploom of black smoke and a metal clanking noise over the sound of the radio and DynoRod was nowhere to be seen!

I managed to pull it onto the A66 and then into the nearby retail park - sat at traffic lights with smoke billowing out and my sunglasses on I appeared not bothered. I eventually got it parked and after some investigation I decided the engine was definitely scrap. But it was driveable so I decided it would make it home. To be fair I made a bloody good go of it, had it not been for a hill I had to go up on the way home which slowly killed the engine; I went from 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st, then just dumped it in a Bus Stop at the top of the hill. My dad came out and we towed it home.

Now, for £100 I should have just scrapped the bloody thing but I was adamant there was profit. I sourced an engine for another £100, swapped it over and got it running against, but that bloody hesitation problem was still there! I decided the new engine needed a good service so did the usual, when I opened the airbox I realised there was no air filter in it! Dropped a filter in and boom, it drove spot on.

I sold it to a mate of a mate a fortnight later for £300, found out that it was then condemned at MOT time a month or so after that because it was a death trap - it had little metal left underneath (how I missed it I will never know!)

Saw it about a year later:

Should have scrapped it when I had the chance! I sold it with the 13" steels though and ended up selling the Escort Si alloys back to the mate I bought the Fiesta off in the first place, as he decided to shift the Mondeo off and had bought an Escort!

it has to be the nissan sunny we bought for £75 after the fiance had a car drive into the side of her at an umarked junction and killed her clio we all walked away and the car got us home to the sunny had 2 months tax and 4 mot thought great this will get her to work and back. we turned up it drove up and down the street so handed over the cash and headed home. After a couple of speed bumps the rear windows both dropped the winders where shot and held in place with a couple of bits of wood. The windscreen wipers didn't work the central locking didn't work on 2 of the doors the heated rear window was disconected the radio was just put in place not wired in.

fixed the wipers with a fuse wedged up the windows ignored the central locking and heated window had an old bolt jammed in to make the connection to the rear window. Lasted a week and she was fed up with it so it was sold on ebay for £120 to a bloke in london who flew up and collected it and she bought a purple KA from Arnold Clark

Good idea

I think for me there are three cars the first was a white opel kadett of 1980 vintage for about £300. Hated it the moment I drove it away but I needed transport. It was moved on pretty quickly. The next car would be a Vectra which was an ex lease car with about 120k miles. I dropped it into the garage for a service and got a call later with a list of jobs costing £££. I immediately took it to a local dealer and swopped it for an older Pug 405 GLX TD saloon. Again hated it for some reason and swopped it within 2-3 days for an Audi 100E 2.0 which I loved and held onto for a year or two Very Happy

No shadow of a doubt, a yellow 1976 Chrysler (Talbot) Alpine bought in 1981 at a car auction for about £300, which was probably £299 more than it was worth. What a horrible little yellow pile of poo it was. God knows why I bought it!!

Two mid 80s Mk3 1.3 escorts, both were around 70k when I bought them and both were shagged, pissing oil out of every orifice.
the 1.1 I bought not long afterwards was a brilliant engine but the car was a rusty heap and failed mot on welding galore.

The next worse I guess is my current Rover 75 with its leaking slave cylinder, water ingress swimming pool back seat and severe lack of oomph.
bleeding does help the clutch a lot, the water was getting in from a back light seal and I have sealed that back up and the oomph could be due to the MAF and the fact that the thermostat is screwed.
Its done 173k and I am umming and ahhing over getting it sorted and keeping it or finding something else as to be fair apart from these problems it is perfect and drives lovely when the clutch has been bled.

This made me laugh because I had a Talbot Sunbeam back in the day and the only difference between mine and yours is mine was a horrible little beige pile of poo Very Happy

That's the absolute beauty of bangernomics...if you do get a lemon, well, so what! You've lost a few quid, learned a few things and probably still had fun.

I'd rather do that, than buy a £10,000 lemon which you tend to be rather stuck with. Crying or Very sad

Worst for me was a x plate citroen Picasso Sx hdi back in june 2009, looked lovely on inspection drove it drove nice, (was buying it for my wife to use for the getting the kids about we had 2 at the time and 3rd due in september) the elderly gentleman (conman) said he was only selling due to his bad leg and he could no longer drive a manual took his word for it, looked nice was quite a girly colour perfect for my mrs... handed over £1595... drove home smug, it had half a tank of fuel init.

anyway 2 weeks later i brimmed the tank got onto a a road and just hit 70mpg and the EML came on and lost all power, so pulled off and turned it on and off and drove it home light still on but seemed fine, got home swapped cars and forgot about it. when i got home later it has leaking diesel out of the tank and it did leak till it only had half of tank then it stopped.... called aa and they cleared the fault codes and said it was both fuel pumps... drove it to the garage told them the problems and they came back with a £3000 estimate to fix it :Cr: :Cr: :Cr:

so i collected it and carried on using it for a month and the EML came on again so called AA same issue again fule pumps, drove it another week then the clutch pedal would be stuck on the floor and not return was a pile of crap... managed to get the clutch pedal back and so i drove it to a citroen dealership and managed to part ex it against a 2 year old picasso petrol desire with 17k on the clock, drove away happy, managed to get a £1000 part ex and paid for the car in cash (not a banger but hey ho) and we still have it have had it 4 years and done 30k, all i have done is changed tyres, brake pads and serviced the bus and have to say it has earnt a place in my heart lol

My first Capri bought in about 1990. It didn't feel like a banger when I bought it because all my mates had fiestas and I had a throbbing 1.6. However, when it rained the footwells filled up with water due to the tops of the A-pillars being rusty. It had a lovely VV carb and would run perfectly some days, like a nightmare on others, and not at all on others. The gearbox howled in 4th gear like you wouldn't believe.

I still loved it and was gutted when it got written off by a 90-year-old woman in a Fiat 126 of all things.

Back in 2001 I Bought a red J-plate ford escort 1.4LX from a trader that must have been related to Dick Turpin.

It looked the part and seemed to run well in spite of having 105k on the clock, plus being young and impatient I wanted it and that was that !
The worst thing about it was I viewed the damn thing twice just to be certain and then handed over £1495 !!

However, it all went downhill from that point onwards, during the journey home the oil pressure warning light came on while i was giving it some welly down a dual carriageway.
(To add insult to injury, after 3 weeks of ownership i crashed the damn thing and had to have the front end straightened out as well) Headbang .

After limping it to work on the monday, that was the start of 18 months worth of wallet abuse of the highest order !
For a 1.4 engined car it was underpowered and was a thirtsy beast.
In no particular order the following parts were replaced,
Camshaft, hydraulic lifters, sump pan, front door lock barrels, front wishbones both sides TWICE and tyres as a result of which, front brakes, rear brakes, rear shocks. I must have got through 6 weber carburettors in order to get it to run right, then i decided to admit defeat and ended up selling it on before i went bankrupt. I managed to sell it for £850 which was far more than i expected to get for it.

I replaced it with a D reg Mitsubishi Colt Automatic purchased for the princely sum of £60 and after replacing the head gasket it provided me with sterling service for a few months while i decided on what to get next, it then provided my mother in law with 5 years of faultless service.

LESSON LEARNED !! everything i've owned since has ranged from free to no more than £350 lol!

Two come to mind, an austin allegro that I bought for £100 with six months mot and as the chap said 'running a bit rough'. Fair enough I thought and after a test drive I thought it would just be a quick timing adjustment or carb tune needed. Drove it home and I could not see a thing behind me for all the smoke from the exhaust! A friend of mine's dad knew a lot about Leyland cars and engines and immediatley though a the piston rings had gone...........Ouch. Upon removing the head this proved to be so, a quick call to the scrap dealer who came round and gave me £50 for it so did not lose to much. The second one was a 1986 metro brought from a car aution with 10 months mot for £750. Lots of anyoying nigggly problems occured, lights, horn not working or only intermitantly, oil leaking like mad, and after about 6 months it started to drive like a dog. Decided to renew the mot and get rid, upon inspection at the mot garage the underside seemed to be made up of filler (lots), and recycled baked bean cans, £400 and lots of welding later had a new mot, sold it at the same car aution for £325.......Ouch. Lesson learned have had many Bangers but never since brought anything Leyland or Rover.

Jaguar XJS - Drank fuel, insurance cost more than the car, alarm would go off randomly for no reason, something broke every time I started it (or tried to), electric windows didn't work and had rust holes you could put your foot through. Total money pit. I was SO relieved to get rid of it. But even that was a nightmare - the clutch failed the day before the guy was coming to collect it!

Morris Ital
lasted me 30 miles
years ago, I mean back in the early 90's
brought it of a work mate who was in Telford
drove it back down the M54
and I heard a knocking, knocking got worse
hit the M6 and all red lights hit the dash, car died, and I rolled to the hard shoulder
just yards off the junction 10
- engine seized - phoned said co worker
'oh yeah it drinks oils a bit''
I was not a happy bunny

Austin Ambassador , bought in 1991 for £300.

Engine blew after about a month of owning it, leaving a large hole in the block.

Replaced engine with one from scrap yard, and back on the road, for a day!
At which point the starter motor packed up.

Picked up another from the scrap yard. Much cursing and grazed knuckles later and the old girl was back running again, for about five minutes , when the accelerator cable snapped!

Cable replaced, and it wouldn't start Headbang

I gave up at this point.

The worst bangers for me are always green!

I don't buy green cars anymore!
