PostSubject: Astra is an automotive landmark!   Sun Jan 06, 2008 10:31 pm

Been trying to offload a 2002 Astra Diesel estate since early in December and you'd think that at the price (2795), it would have gone by now with 6 months MoT and a few months tax. But no. It's become what's known in the Trade as a landmark as it's been there so long.

When I put the description in the window I deliberately left out the mileage, figuring genuine buyers will call to find out what it is. I've had at least six enquiries but as soon as I tell them it's got 120,000 service historied, Dixons Retail miles under its 14" wheels they turn on their heels and walk away without so much as asking for the keys.

Perhaps I shouldn't tell them and put a piece of tape over the mileage, get them to drive it, then ask them how many miles they think it's done.

I've always said that a well maintained, well looked after higher mileage car is always better value than a low mileage, short journey school run special.

Condition is everything, but some people look no further than the speedometer, and in doing so they're missing out on some real bargains with many more thousands of miles left in them.

10 years ago I bought an ex-Rank Xerox 1995 Rover 620ti which had covered 99,000 miles, but it was a full 2500 cheaper than the same year and colour 40k 620ti that was for sale by a main dealer a few yards up the road. And you know, I had 28,000 trouble free miles out of that car until I sold it, and it later appeared at a car supermarket showing 78,000 miles! pale

As I said, condition is everything.

The Astra's still here. No enquiries at all this week Sad

According to Glass's it's worth about 2100 retail. So be it.

What colour is it? My Passat has done 136k - so your's is low mileage in comparison. My Scirocco's done 181k! People need to get over the mileage!

Well... at least it's a bargain for someone who appreciates the art of bangernomics Smile

It's silver and in excellent condition. Not enough to sell it, obviously.

Kev

Have you sold it? I can't believe how people won't buy anything over 100,000 actually 60,000 is the cut off for so many people, they are such idiots...

Nope, didn't sell it. Ended up trading it back out again for a slight loss. Can't win 'em all.

Just had a 1999 Focus 2.0 Ghia, 11 months MoT and a bit of tax and very smart in flame red, everything worked and it hid its 130k well. It took all of four days to sell it for 1750. More of those, please, they really are good news; everyone wants them.

Though, I did have a few people who turned on their heels when I told them the mileage. They missed out on a nice car, as the new owner will testify.

And they drive so much better than an Astra.
