What Exactly is Bangernomics?

I suppose Bangernomics has always been around but there was a time when nobody had considered it Bangernomics or for that matter given it a name.

The Term Bangernomics came about When Motoring Journalist James Rupert Wrote a book and penned the name and the Bangernomics Bible soon became the guide for those wanting to run a car for much less than the new car buying public where putting down as a deposit on their shiny new cars

As a Child of the 70's i grew up through the 70's and 80's and on my particular street i can honestly say until the late 80's nobody on my street owned a new car.

Early to mid 80,s most cars in my street were 60's vintage and those that were 70's were considered a bit flash

These were the sort of cars i grew up with

But they were not considered bangers they were just a way of life

Coming towards the end of the 80's newer and even new cars were starting to appear as people were often buying car on the "Never Never" Finance.

Things began to change and you were considered a little eccentric if you still ran a banger!

Cars had moved on as Power Steering,Electric Windows,Air Conditioning started to become the norm and a banger was so far removed from new cars available then often having heavy steering no AC no electric windows and in some cases no Radio!

[center]People often had no choice though they ran what they could afford and at the close of the 80's Old Vivas, Escorts, Cortina's and Datsuns amongst others were the bangers of the day.

Today Bangernomics isn't always born out of necessity and as things have moved on so have cars.

Now most cheap Bangernomics cars will have the mods cons that Bangers of yesteryear didn't, Power Steering,Electric Windows,Air Conditioning and modern stereo systems.

Modern Bangers if they have been treated well will often feel as tight as much newer cars do.

These Days the Bangernomics Followers come from all walks of life, there are those who now would rather drive what constitutes a Banger even though they can afford a new car they simply don't want to,and who can blame them?

There are Bangernomics cars of all sizes to suit all needs from super-minis to family cars to luxury prestige cars all for less than the down payment on a basic new city car i!

Now the Bangers are often well looked after and comfortable Nissan Micra's, Vw Polos or Golfs

Yes you can drive a fantastic piece of luxury German engineering for banger money :Wky:

Essentially there are three levels of Bangernomics

Buy a cheap car with a long MOT if it fails the next MOT just sell it as spares and buy another for the next year of motoring Thumb

Buy a cheap car and as long as it keeps going and doesn't attract any large repair bills just keep running it

And the controversial one !

Inherited Bangernomic Status :Co:

Many think if you buy a New car its not Bangernomics?
But if you bought one 20 years ago and kept it refusing to buy the next new replacement model eventually you practice Bangernomics by default :Wky:

The car has been payed for it no longer owes you anything and its probably stopped depreciating :W:

Whatever category of Bangernomics you fit into you are all welcome here Shake

The basic philosophy is:

Buy a car good clean car without major faults in the region of 1000 or less

Run and Maintain it for very little

If it starts costing money sell it on for as near to the purchase price as you can recoup

Repeat Recipe as often as needed

Wave Car Finance goodbye forever Thumb

When others laugh at your car because its not the latest registration console yourself with the fact that you don't have car payments every month for the next 4 years!!

Sounds like your kind of motoring?

Make yourself at home you have arrived at the Bangernomics Forum Clap
