PostSubject: Re: Eccentric   Wed Oct 03, 2007 2:28 pm

In Australia for many years, age meant nothing in cars, but lately it has all gone towards the new. Sad thing is that it's the 'wants/don't have the folding' that are over-heating the market & stopping any real discounts. Basically, they can't afford what they're buying but have to be seen in a new car due to peer pressure etc. What a sad state of affairs... Debt = status. Hmmm...bankrupt must = sex god?

I sometimes wish to be that shallow so logic will cease to permeate my cranium. Meanwhile I will just have to be grateful for Mr. Rupperts assistance in showing me the light all those years ago in 'Car' magazine & for being such a statesman for this subject.

Thank you Stuart for your kind words, in the UK there is a scary amount of support for taking older cars off the road on dubious environmental grounds. The one side effect of idiots buying brand new zero rate finance cars is that the used market has even cheaper cars. You can't ever sell a used car now which is the problem unless you are a run into the ground merchant like me. I am waiting for my gearbox to explode, then I can buy something else.

Oh, it's easy for me not to be able to get a new car on finance, as I know the finance co will decline my offer of custom. Well, they did once about 8 years ago and I've never bothered since; haven't needed to.

But hey, it's great fun being in the showroom choosing a stupidly priced car and adding on all the accessories you don't need to the total price, wasting at least two hours of the salesmans time, only for him to then find out you're not creditworthy. cheers And he made me a coffee.

Yes, Good work Kevin, I have recently been wasting time in car showrooms and it scares the living daylights out of me. My Mrs suddenly thought that a new 7 seater would be good for family commitments, but actually discovering how much money you have to spend has scared her witless. So we bought some nice new carpets instead... Marvellous.

Yeah, funny how manufacturers make 259 a month sound reasonable. It might be for one month, but not 36 of them! I've just bought a brand new set of OE alloys for my Rover 200BRM off ebay (just 95 a set) and I'll treat it to a new set of tyres, and I'm having the front end repainted due to stone chips but all that will come in at less than 500 and it'll be like having a new car again.

Well, it'll soon be Christmas, and the Wife has had a new suite (paid for, not financed). Us blokes have to justify these things you know.

Kev that was 95 well spent. Your BRM looks great and of course the brilliant thing about Bangernomics is that you can spend real money on the important things in life like drink and holidays and not slide into never, never debt.

That's right, James. Oh, we've got debts; I owe the dentist 15 but the b******d did hurt me so he can wait! As for the BRM I can't believe they can be picked up for less than 1k now. All that class, distinction and exclusivity for the price of a worn-smooth 1993 BMW 316.

Of course! You did the article about buying a BRM in the September 2001 issue of Car. The guy who owned that car, Mat, sold it about a year or so ago and got a fair bit for it as it was more unique than a normal BRM. I think he got about 4k for it.

This one's a bit leggy, but it's got 12 months MoT and 6 months tax

I remember reading that BRM article whilst I was on holiday in Turkey that year (same week as 9/11 Twin Towers disaster) and I decided to get one when I got back... And I did. 8495 I paid No

Blimey that was quick Kevin, I've clicked the watching button and will see how it can go. I'll bid if someone buys mine first, I put it on Autotrader and never got a sniff...J

Kevin, you've got a better memory than me for that stuff, but I'm sure you are going to keep your BRM forever, I don't mind that leggy Ebay one though...

That'll be a bargain. AutoTrader? How many calls have you had from companies promising to sell your car from interested buyers in your area?

Oh, I've got a folder full of BRM road tests. Autocar and Top Gear just laughed, mostly. Auto Express were more enthusisastic, though.

Just ask about the head gasket on that one; you know what the K-Series is like.

Actually I never got any bother on the phone, but I have had so many overseas scammers and they were a pain, but I just refer them to each other so they hopefully end up scamming each other...

PostSubject: Re: Eccentric   Mon Oct 08, 2007 9:29 pm

Certainly not. I've just come back from the local car auction and have seen some pretty nasty tat selling for that kind of money. Anyway, my brother-in-law needed a car urgently for work as his 1995 Renault Laguna has called it a day so we went to the auction.

He picked a 1996 Escort 1.6LX (loads of Pug 406's and BMW 3-Series there, as usual) in blue with 6 months MoT and 3 months tax, service history and 98k for 500 + 48 buyers fee. It's even got a CD player and it came with an end of sale trial (1 hour to find any faults) Thing is, it's ideal for hacking backwards and forwards on his 40 mile daily commute and the beauty of it is it was there and it was ready to go.

Buying at auction saves a lot of fannying about going through the classifieds and driving from one county to another looking at misdescribed nails on council estates.

Yes, auctions are good places to get bargains if you know what you are doing. THat sounds perfect and you are right that it saves you time following up rubbish classified ads. I went and drove loads of old and modern cars today back to back around Hyde Park Corner, 190E vs C Class, old XJ6, new XJ8 fascinating, I'll post the full story if anyone is interested....J

OK, and if you ever, for some bizarre reason, would like to re-acquaint or even acquaint yourself with a Princess you're welcome to have a go in one of mine. The nearest modern equivalent would probably be a Mondeo, Passat or even Rover 75.

Actually the saddest thing was that apart from an old XJ6 and a brit built Fiesta, our old cars weren't there, we lost the car war!

Yup, shame. And I read last week that the 10million spent by us tax payers on the MG Rover collapse enquiry so far would have been enough to have kept the company going. confused

What an absolute waste.
