Hi,

With the so called bad weather of the last few days. Have you noticed plenty of non-bangers being seen to by the likes of Greenflag / RAC and the rest? Question

Not to mention the smug knowledge that we're not as nervous about getting a scratch!

Just come back after a 800 mile trip (over a couple of weeks you understand Laughing ) in our Mercedes 190d,never missed a beat Wink

We still have a newer car its not really ours its fleet but we decided to use that when we returned as it was fueled up Wink

The Newish car is a Mini Copper D and just 18 months old we jumped in but it wouldn't start Crying or Very sad took several attempts Rolling Eyes

and all the warning lights kept coming up saying everything was faulty Crying or Very sad

It looked very much like the ECU didn't like the cold Laughing

The Merc however despite 152k and 20 years service just starts without fuss Wink

At this rate when the Mini Contract is up ill be looking for another old Benz or maybe a Mk2 Golf to replace it Wink

That's the sort of reliability that I like. No box of tricks over ruling common sense.

Starts and goes.

PLUS. You most likely had a very enjoyable drive! Very Happy

I guess for a replacement. A Merc wins on the comfort front. Possibly on the durability as well, I'm not familiar with Golfs or Mercs mechanically?

I'm worried the days of 'the reliable banger' are numbered though with cars increasing reliance on electric gizmos being involved in everything.

Yeah, I have worries about what is in the future for owning an older car.

1) Electronically; more tech being used for more jobs in the modern car.

2) Governmentally; what's in store from our Government and the Europeans. Like deciding to scrap anything over 10 years unless MOT'd every other week or if you drive a car over 15 years old you have to employ someone to walk in front of the car with a red flag!

Are they still making Morris Oxfords in India, Hindustans? If they meet emissions I might have to drive one back! Wink

The saviors are the enthuiasts, who keep their cars in mint condition, the values still drop as the fashions change... But yep all those electronics in new motors do over complicate things, i suppose we'll have to go on computer courses to run bangers in 10 years!?

WEA Car Programming Tuesday Night's at Rec Centre Smile

Can you imagine it, instead of just the Sat Nav telling you where to go*, the Onboard computer will be nagging you ease off the gas - you have just save 0.25mgs of CO2, slow down out side old people's homes and don't forget the shopping, plus little Timmy's dentist appointment.

All in the voice of Sybil Fawlty or the male equivalent for female drivers!

Ta,
Carl
