In one of my more entrepreneurial moments i've thought about the logic of starting a Rent a Wreck type business in the UK. Perhaps in a similar way to these modern car sharing schemes.

The idea being to rent out older (but reliable) cars that people actually want to drive.

I've got a mate with a V6 Omega automatic. A few weeks back his mate ended up behind the wheel. His mate runs new Audi TDi's. His comment was "I love driving that car". Bottom line was that many people have forgotten just how nice a big lazy petrol V6 is because we're all pre-conditioned now to think the 'be-all-and-end-all' is a 30/yr road fund licence.

I must admit to laughing my head off when people tell me how much money they've spent on their new car and finish off the sentence with "and it does 55mpg".

I ask.... "Why do you care when you've just spent 30k and will loose 50% of that over the next 3 years, you can clearly afford to chuck it away!"

So anyway, the ideal fleet would be something like:

V6 Omega
24v V6 Granada
Rover 825i
Vauxhall Carlton 2.6i
Volvo 960 24v
BMW 5/7 series
Mercedes (any big old merc)
Perhaps a couple of classic Mini's, 2cv's, Fiat Pandas etc

These are all cheap as chips and suffer zero depreciation. Feel free to add to the list, its not exhaustive

I suppose the idea of joint ownership is good so long as its shared when it comes to maintenance parts, tax, mot etc.

Maybe even a shared Pool car between several friends?

Ideal for people who are not "car people" or who live in a city like London where they commute on the tube and only need a car on days off etc Wink

I like the idea of a UK rent a wreck scheme though they wouldn't be wrecks Wink

Only car i see as being a problem is a Classic Mini Rolling Eyes

My last older car was a Classic Mini and was a bit of a Money Pit Rolling Eyes

Not that they are all money pits but you need to like welding if you own a Classic Mini Laughing Laughing Laughing
