PostSubject: Places to buy a banger   Fri Nov 25, 2011 10:47 am

I'm after a car as realiable as can be for the money I'll have by time next month comes (700). I've always lived by my sub 1k rule ever since I got ripped off getting a motor on finance, was young and stupid!

I'm looking on Autotrader and eBay, any more decent sites out there?

Hello Under 1K. A pal runs used car expert, they have several 100K cars on their search engine. usedcarexpert.co.uk . Otherwise it is Gumtree.

I'd go Japanese, Avensis, Primera, Almera the really unfashionable stuff which won't break down, good luck and tell us what you buy. Best regards James Oh see also what others have bought and run at http;//www.bangernomics.com

Cheers, seen a load of Toyata Celicas that are right up my street. Read up on them and doesn't seem to be any real issues. Will spend the next few weeks scouring the web for info, will keep you posted!

PostSubject: garage   Wed Nov 30, 2011 3:42 pm

get friendly with a local garage (non franchise) who will undoubtedly get the odd MOT failure that are not worth repairing due to labour rate for the fix but are worth doing if you can diy. We have a Proton Compact bought off a customer who just bought a new car - for the cost of the failed MOT (50) plus the customer wanted the CD player back out of it. The fail sheet was lots of bulbs and bits and bobs like hazard lights not working plus a hole in the exhaust which was pretty rusty. I think it was 14 fails, mostly fiddly bits. With labour this was a few hundred quid.

Some wiring, patience, bulbs and a bit of old exhaust later (skip salvage) it passed albeit it's not as silenced as before! Best thing was the free retest at the same garage that failed it!!! And it was still taxed.

It now owes 75 inclusive. And it's been running about for several weeks fine! Hooray!

Great result and good advice, unfortunately I've no idea about fixing cars and wouldn't have time to do that.

Altering checking insurance the Celicais out of my range. Renault megane coupe is though, what's your thoughts on that?
