PostSubject: Cheap Maintenance?   Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:48 am

I've recently bought a Scirocco Scala (1.8 injection) - with leather seats, alloys, MOT, cd-mp3 player, and practically new tyres all round, for only 350! I've also managed to get classic insurance! Which is nice... the only problem I've got is getting used to not having power steering when driving around town, and the weak brakes compared to my other, more modern car*, with discs all round...

However, I've recently serviced it, (oil, oil filter, air filter, sparks etc), and fixed the easier problems... I bought halfords brand oil, but noticed ASDA now sell 5 litres of oil for 8 ! Shocked

Would you service a car with such cheap oil or is it better to spend a bit more on service parts?

PS - glad to see the site is active with a forum Smile

PostSubject: Oil   Fri Dec 07, 2007 10:16 am

Hello Joshua, welcome aboard, hopefully we will get busier, but I would be interested to hear what the other blokes think on this one, but my feeling is do it cheaper and more often. The 1.8 engine is a tough lump and would respond well to regular oil changes every 6 months. Change the filter every other time as it becomes more efficient with age before clogging up. That's my 10 pence worth and that's the beauty of an older car with a great engine which I have run up to massive mileages without missing a beat and just regular oil changes and services. Any one else care to comment?

You bought Halfords brand oil?! No way!! ASDA sell Texaco Havoline 15W-50 for 8.97 a gallon and I've always used it in my everyday cars with no problems (it is Texaco oil after all). By all means buy the filter at Halfords as it's not much dearer than the Motor Factors and you can see it on the shelf before you buy.

If you want 20W-50 oil then it has to be ASDA again as they do Car Club 20W-50 for 2.98 a gallon and I've always used it in my Wedges, again with no problems, and Anti-Freeze is only 3 for half a gallon, which again is about 8 cheaper at ASDA than it is at Halfrods, or anywhere else for that matter, and it's proper stuff too, again made by Car Club (I can't remember who owns that brand).

Even things like polishes, waxes and sprays are all cheaper at places like ASDA and Tesco A 500ml can of Turtle Wax 'Black in a Flash' is 4.99 in Halfords, yet exactly the same product can be bought in ASDA's for 1.97! That's a saving of, erm, quite a lot. At least enough to buy a pint on the way home.

My motto is shop around; while your wife is going around the supermarket with the trolley have a wander over to the motoring section and see how much money you can save on consumables. You'll be surprised.

In defence of Halfrauds, though, I would recommend their batteries. I used to buy cheap, 2 year guarantee ones from Motor Factors but found that on cold mornings their cranking power was as limp as a vicar's handshake, so I decided to pay the extra for a Halfrauds one and have had no trouble since.

And at least Halfrauds is open at 3.30 on a Sunday afternoon, when you're most likely to need it open.

Thanks Kev, I knew you could be relied upon to know the true price of oil. You will be namechecked as Rovamota in an upcoming Autocar column.

Thanks, James. Over the weekend I'll do a price check on them as we don't usually shop at ASDA. We only go in there if we HAVE too, being a Tesco shopper mainly. But as a confirmed cheapskate I always shop around.

I will look in to it, though.

Look forward to that frontline report...I've still got some '60s/'70s tins of Fina from my late Uncle Charles garage which hasn't gone gunky. I still use it in my 'older' engines

Take care J

Right, fought through the Christmas shoppers into ASDA today to get the lowdown on the price of oil. Here goes:

1 gallon Castrol GTX 12.98 (17.99 in Halfords)
1 gallon Texaco Havoline 15W-40 7.98
2 litre Car Club Anti Freeze 3.46 (equivalent @5.00 more in Halfords)
1 gallon ASDA 20W-50 4.24 (equivalent 14.99 in Halfords)

And Black in a Flash is still only 1.97 for a 500ml can in ASDA (4.49 in Halfords)

So there you go, supermarkets are the cheapest place to get your oil and other consumables.

PostSubject: Under Pressure   Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:07 pm

Thanks for that tip, I could have done with one today. Stuck in the middle of nowhere with three children and another adult looking at deflated tyre. Used that gunky stuff to partly get it back together then drove to friendly local haulier in farmyard who let me inflate with a proper compressor thanks Belinda, but tyre had it by the end of the day, so put the space saver on in Waitrose car park. Sadly they don't do remoulds in the posh supermarket...J

I bought a set of four 17" alloys for my Passat for 120 with tyres!

That works out at about 30 a tyre!! (with some free alloys!) Lasted a year so far on them, probably last another 6 months on the back two tyres and another 1 - 2 years on the fronts.

THat's good going, I had to spend 100 on alloys and then there were only two decent tyres and I am a tyre obsessive so bought a set of fresh, but obviously one of the decent ones as a spare...I love full sized spares...space savers are pure evil.
