The new rules state that your car has to be insured if it's not SORNed.
If it's SORNed, you have to return the tax disc.

So, what happens if you've bought another car, transferred your insurance, and you're waiting to sell the old one, which is sitting on your drive?
You'll have to SORN it, and return the tax disc, which means that prospective buyers can't legally test-drive it.

So, pretty much ALL bangers will have to bought without tax, and trailered home.

Or am I getting this wrong?

Yes I got a renewal the other day and that slip of paper from the DVLA which does seem designed to catch people out rather than make sure everyone is insured. Yes we will all have to go out and buy trailers then, but keeping the car taxed and insured is the only thing we can do.
